Gary van der Zweep was recently honoured when he received an Apprenticeship Award of Distinction for Instructor of the Year.
The award was given on Nov. 1 at the 12th annual Apprenticeship Manitoba and the Apprenticeship and Certification Board’s awards.
Van der Zweep is academic co-ordinator at Red River College’s Stevenson campus – Aviation and Aerospace (75 Musketeer Rd.) at Southport. Students from across Canada, who are already working for aviation and aerospace companies, have the chance to fulfil their apprenticeship requirements at the campus to earn an aircraft maintenance engineer’s licence.
He has worked at the Stevenson campus for 18 years. Van der Zweep graduated from an aircraft maintenance training program in Thunder Bay, Ont., then worked for small aviation companies in Canada’s north before returning to southern Manitoba to work on contracts servicing military aircraft in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie.
Vander der Zweep was nominated for the instructor of the year award by student Rylan Hiebert who is in the apprenticeship program and working at Portage Aircraft.
“Being nominated is an honour in itself,” he said, adding that he was surprised when he found out that he won the award.
