Shopping locally for holiday treats
Oakville’s annual Christmas Market is set for Sat., Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Oakville Community Hall, three kilometres south of Hwy. 1 and 13.

The hall is wheelchair accessible and admission is free.

Thirty-five vendors will be selling products from homemade baking to handcrafted jewelry and clothing to holiday décor items. There will be free vendor bingo cards to enter in a draw to win gift baskets provided by Community Futures White Horse Plains.

Taking the stage
The Whoop & Hollar Folk Festival is partnering with Badlands Promotions, Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 65, Sawmill Tea + Coffee Co., & Visions of Independence Inc. to host a monthly Open Mic & Jam Night.

The first open mic night is Fri., Nov. 30 from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 65 (275 Duke Ave.), Portage la Prairie.

Performers are welcome to take the stage for music, comedy, poetry, drama or dance performances, among other forms of entertainment.

“The monthly Open Mic & Jam Nights showcase both emerging and established local talent from Portage la Prairie and across southern Manitoba. If you’ve never performed before or would like to try out new material in front of a live audience, we invite you to take part in this interactive live entertainment series, where literally anything goes. It’s all about having fun,” Whoop & Hollar artistic director and outreach co-ordinator Josh Wright said.

He added that the nights are open to the public and everyone is welcome to join in the jam session.

Dates for the 2019 open mic shows are Fri., Jan. 25, Fri., Feb. 22, Fri., Mar. 29, and Fri., April 26.

Celebrate the season at the museum
Fort la Reine Museum (2652 Saskatchewan Ave. E) is holding a Yuletide at the Museum on Sat., Dec. 8 from noon to 3 p.m.

Activities include an artisan market, sleigh rides, cookie decorating, make and take potpourri, and a photo booth, as well as free cocoa, a condensed reading of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, hand bell ringing and caroling.

Admission is by donation.

Get ready for tax time
Join Community Futures White Horse Plains / Heartland on Tues., Dec. 4 from 7 to 9 p.m. for an informative workshop, Its Almost Tax Time, What do You Need to Prepare!  at 11 – 2nd Street NE in Portage la Prairie.

A professional tax accountant with 30 years of experience will discuss common business expenses that can be claimed and the rules surrounding them. A focus will be on how to keep your business audit-ready and audit-proof while providing your accountant with all the information needed to do your tax returns so that nothing is missed.
