Area resident giving tips for good night’s sleep

Joleen Dilk Salyn knows a thing or two about getting babies to sleep, and she wants to share that knowledge with other parents.
Dilk Salyn, a certified child sleep consultant who received training from the Family Sleep Institute, founded Winnipeg-based Baby Sleep 101 in July.
Baby Sleep offers email, phone, or home consultations, as well as customized sleep plans.
Dilk Salyn said her two-year-old daughter Falena was having trouble sleeping so she started to do some research to find programs that offered sleep consultant courses.
“This time last year I figured I wouldn’t have any more children,” said Dilk Salyn, who is now expecting another child in November.
“I was a teacher for seven years and figured I could put this information into a curriculum and help other parents so they don’t struggle the way I did.”
Dilk Salyn, a resident of Harbour View South, said her daughter would only take short naps and wasn’t able to sleep through the night.
“She was miserable all the time and I was upset. You get stressed out, you fight, and you could lose your temper,” she said.
“I felt like I was in the black hole of depression.”
St. James resident Jane Snow turned to Dilk Salyn when her daughter was six-months-old to help improve her sleeping pattern.
Snow said her daughter Ava didn’t sleep well from the beginning and was sleeping in the bed she shares with her husband Jamie.
“By six months she was waking up every two hours, sometimes every half hour, and it was a lot,” said Snow, whose daughter is now nine-months-old.
“I wanted to get her into her crib and sleeping for longer stretches of time.”
Snow said since consulting with Baby Sleep 101 she is getting more sleep and spending more time with Ava.
“It’s been amazing. Now she’s sleeping 12 hours and waking once for a feeding,” she said.
“During the day she’s taking naps so I’m able to get workouts in or have a cup of coffee. I get to do chores and spend more time with her when she’s awake.”
Dilk Salyn said since she has experienced the problem first-hand, she is better equipped to help families get their kids into a proper sleeping pattern.
“That’s how I relate to other parents. Unless you’ve been sleep deprived, you have no idea how it feels,” she said.
Dilk Salyn is offering a free child sleep seminar on Oct. 15 from 7 to 8 p.m. at Exquisite Taste located at 1-2089 Plessis Rd.
