A Transcona insurance staple is marking some changes with a barbecue.

Orion Insurance Brokers came under the wing of Western Financial Group back in the fall, but are making the changes official with a community barbecue and ribbon cutting at 5-630 Kildare Ave. on May 11.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with MP Lawrence Toet (Elmwood-Transcona) and MLA Daryl Reid (Transcona) in attendance to help cut the ribbon at 11 a.m.

“We wanted to have something for the community to let them know about (the changes),” said branch manager Sheryle Lazaruk. “We decided to wait ‘til the spring and do the grand opening, ribbon cutting, barbecue and invite as many of the community out as possible to have a hot dog and a drink.”

As well, the firm is selling tickets for a prize basket that will be given away at 2 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the Transcona Food Bank.

Lazaruk said staff from Orion remained in place over the course of the changes, while the group was able to add a financial representative to round out their slate of services — making plans like life insurance more accessible to customers.

“(Before), if somebody wanted life insurance, we could find them somebody, but we didn’t have an employee who was a financial rep,” she said, noting the employee works out of a different office, due to space constraints, but is available during business hours.
