Athletics fieldhouse at Max Bell Centre renamed for Jim Daly

Jim Daly, the man who started the University of Manitoba’s track and field club in 1949, will be honoured by having the university’s  indoor athletics fieldhouse at Max Bell Centre named after him.

The James Daly Fieldhouse at the Max Bell Centre will be officially unveiled on Feb. 27. Daly, 88, who is known as Mr. Track and Field in Manitoba, will be present. The announcement comes as the U of M hosts the 2015 Canada West track and field meet.

Daly managed Canada’s Olympic team in 1964, served eight years on the board of Tennis Canada and was executive director of the 1967 Pan American Games in Winnipeg. He was named to the the Order of Canada in 2001

He began working full time for the University in 1968 as assistant to the director of physical education and continued coaching track and field at the university until 1996.

He was also involved in the planning of the Frank Kennedy Centre and the indoor complex known as the “Gritty Grotto”, which has now been replaced by the new Active Living Centre at the U of M.
