The Times and The Herald posed four questions to all the candidates running for election in Kildonan-St.Paul. Here are the answers of Conservative candidate Jim Bell.
Q: How would you recommend that your party spur economic development in Kildonan-St. Paul?
A: Remain devoted to a plan that calls for low taxes, a balanced budget and the creation of jobs. More specifically, continue to support education at every level including loans, grants, and apprenticeship programs.
Continue to work with our young people as they explore the many options available to them and as they prepare to enter the workforce.
Q: How do you feel you and your party can support the lives of Kildonan-St. Paul residents, specifically seniors in the riding?
A: Continue to listen and engage with all residents of the riding. Specific to seniors, continue to work with them and build upon the solid economic infrastructure already put in place. This would include pension splitting for seniors, the Tax-Free Savings Account (TSFA), enhanced pension credit, and lowering the withdrawal limits for Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF). Educate seniors about some of the new initiatives a re-elected Conservative government will introduce, such as the Single Seniors Tax Credit, and policies that will crack down on seniors’ fraud.
Q: Kildonan-St. Paul residents on the west side of the Red River were among the first to lose door-to-door Canada Post service in favour of community mail boxes. How do you feel residents in the riding have been affected by the end of door-to-door delivery?
A: From the comments I have received, I believe residents are relatively content with the community mailboxes and service they have received. Certainly some are opposed, but relative to other issues this has not been a key discussion point brought to my attention.
Q: What issue, that is not one of the issues discussed above, do you feel is of the most concern to Kildonan-St. Paul residents and how will you address it?
A: Although mentioned above, many residents I speak to want a government that continues to deliver a stable and growing economy which allows individuals and families to prosper. I would be a strong and active voice for individuals, families and seniors in Kildonan-St.Paul to ensure they are well represented in this regard.
