Game on!
Despite blowing snow and gloomy weather leading into the weekend, the North Kildonan Community Centre’s Winter Classic went off without a hitch. Held on the outdoor rinks Jan. 23 and 24, the annual outdoor event drew children and parents to the North Kildonan Community Centre (1144 Kingsford Pl.).”
Once a regular feature of the local hockey season, outdoor winter classic tourneys are harder to come by these days.
“The interest for outdoor tournaments is going down,” Terry Stafeckis, caretaker and icemaker at NKCC, told The Herald. “The main factor is temperature, windchill.”
According to Winnipeg Minor Hockey rules, “No outdoor game or practice shall be played when the temperature is colder than -25C or the windchill factor exceeds -28C, two hours up to and including game time.”
This year, though, temperatures were ideal for the winter classic, hovering just below zero.
