Hey there, time traveller!

“Every kid at some point in their childhood pretends to have a Raygun and that’s why everyone relates so well to the story” says Greg Schoen, creator of RAYGUN, a six-issue miniseries from Alterna Comics, that was released on March 9.
Schoen, who attended Munroe Junior High and Miles Mac, has spent the last five years in Tokyo and now lives in Burnaby, B.C., promoting his comic series full-time.
He explained the story to me via a video call.
“RAYGUN is about a 10-year-old boy named Matthew Baker, who finds Nikola Tesla’s fabled ‘death ray’ and sets out on a voyage of self-discovery that will change the world,” Schoen says.
“Matthew’s journey begins in issue one when he is sent by his drug addict mother to live with his estranged father in Hollywood. Soon he is dealing with being a new kid at school and almost immediately gets into a fight with the school’s bully. It’s a lot for any kid to take and just when things can’t get any worse he finds the most powerful weapon in the world.
“This story lets us imagine how cool it would be to have a ray gun as a kid but also how dangerous it would be to have the world’s most powerful weapon in the hands of a troubled 10-year-old boy,” Schoen says.
“The tone of the series is reminiscent of the Amblin Entertainment films released during the 1980s and ’90s (E.T.,The Goonies, Young Sherlock Holmes),” Schoen explains.
“It’s a story for young adults that combines science fiction, action and adventure.”
Greg has been working on releasing his first comic series since his early 20s and could not be more excited for readers to see what he and his team have created. I share this enthusiasm after previewing a few pages of the promotional release. The art is drawn beautifully with convincing detail and realism.
Covers, pencils and grey tones are done by Alonso Molina while Paulo Lopez handles inks and lettering.
RAYGUN is available on Google Books, Amazon, ComiXology, Kindle, Scribed and Nook.
