An East Kildonan resident has his own special memory from the Heritage Classic after former Winnipeg Jet Morris Lukowich joined his pickup hockey game on Mon., Oct. 24.

Rob Oliphant has been part of  the Two Shades of Gray Hockey Club’s regular Monday night game at the Seven Oaks Arena for several years. He explained teammate Kai Jacob, the vice-principal at Miles Macdonell Collegiate, met the player while skiing in Fernie, B.C. and the two exchanged phone numbers. Knowing he was in town for the Heritage Classic, Jacob texted him and invited him to join the game. Lukowich said yes.

Lukowich, who played with the Jets from the 1978-79 through 1984-85 seasons, was still in town and took the players up on their offer.

“He showed up with his Jets uniform because that was the only equipment he had with him,” Oliphant said. “He looked pretty good.”

“At 60 years of age Lukowich showed everyone why he was a star,” Two Shades top winger Marek Kutka,a teacher at Kildonan East, said. “It certainly was a night to remember.”
