Fans of authentic Mexican tacos will welcome the addition of BMC Taqueria (1113 Henderson Hwy.) to the neighbourhood.
“We try to keep it simple, we focus on value, and we try to provide something that is authentic Mexican,” said Rigoberto Colin-Camorlinga, who runs the business with his wife Betty Calderon-Villasenor. “That’s pretty much what we are.”
Colin-Camorlinga and Calderon moved to Winnipeg in 2001 from Morelia, Mexico. It didn’t take them long to realize there was a serious lack of authentic Mexican food in the city. In 2010, they opened BMC Market (722 Osborne St.) as a place to buy imported Mexican products. In 2012, they began serving up hot, fresh tacos.

“We always had the intention to add the food but it took a couple years to get that in place,” said Colin-Camorlinga.
Slowly but surely, their business has grown as word spread among taco aficionados across the city. For either five or seven dollars, customers get three chorizo, beef, chicken or vegetarian tacos. The corn tortillas are cooked fresh in house, and an array of cold Mexican drinks are available to wash them down. Quesadillas, pozole, pico de gallo and guacamole are also available.
“We focus on value, quality, and customer service,” Colin-Camorlinga said. “When we get in conversation with people, we mean it. We don’t talk just to talk.”
According to Colin-Camorlinga, it was always a goal to grow the business beyond the comfortable confines of South Osborne. The choice to open in northeast Winnipeg came as a result of repeated requests from customers in the area.
“Many of our returning customers are from this area,” said Colin-Camorlinga, who runs the new Henderson location, while Calderon-Villasenor runs the Osborne Street location. “That’s the main reason that we are here.”
Colin-Camorlinga estimates that while the bulk of the business is take-out orders, many people still enjoy eating in. And while the new Henderson location is slightly more spacious than the Osborne location, the menu is unchanged.
“We try to keep all the flavours, everything, the same for both places,” he said.
And while Colin-Camorlinga is excited about the new space, there are no immediate plans to expand further. However, the idea is not off the table.
“We always say we’ll let the business tell us what to do,” he said. “We will make a decision from there. We don’t want to lose our identity. We want to keep things personal. Our plans will always be made with that in mind. If we do something, it has to fit. We don’t want to get too big. We don’t want to lose what we have.”
BMC Taqueria is open Monday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
