The City of Winnipeg’s 2017 Winnipeg Wards Boundaries Commission (WBC) released a draft report recommending changes to ward boundaries across the city last week.

While the boundaries for the Elmwood-East Kildonan ward remain unchanged, changes are recommended for North Kildonan and Transcona.

Under the commissions proposal, the residential Riverbend and Rivergrove neighbourhoods on the west side of the Red River and north of the Chief Peguis Trail would be added to the North Kildonan ward. Transcona would be expanded to include the largely industrial neighbourhoods of Symington Yards, the St. Boniface Industrial Park, and Southland Park.

According to the City, WBCs are required “at minimum once every 10 years to establish ward boundaries for each ward based on the City’s population, as determined by the latest Census, and other criteria set out in the legislation.”

Members of the 2017 WBC are: the Honourable Justice Mr. Ken Hanssen, judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench of Manitoba; Dr. Annette Trimbee, president and vice-chancellor of The University of Winnipeg; and Marc Lemoine, senior election official for the City of Winnipeg.

Established to review the boundaries and names of the 15 council wards in Winnipeg, the commission will hold a public hearing on Nov. 1 for residents to provide feedback on the proposed changes.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. at City Hall (510 Main St.) in the main Council Chamber. Written input will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 To view the draft report and, visit www.winnipeg.ca/clerks/WardsBoundaries/
