Two Manitoba Hydro substations in northeast Winnipeg will be converted to green space this summer.
According to Hydro, the 24—4vV station at 400 Sutton Ave., originally built in 1939, was replaced by different site with new equipment and more capacity in 2006. It was de-electrified shortly thereafter.
The two-bank 12.47/4.16kV station at 511 Martin Ave. W, which was built in 1950, has exceeded firm capacity. When a new station at Martin was constructed in 2016, the old station was de-energized.
Environmental testing has been done by Hydro at both locations, and electrical apparatus removed. In the coming months, contractors will be removing above grade structures and infrastructure from both sites. Hydro will be removing concrete foundations and below grade infrastructure from the Sutton station in the spring.
Once those steps have been completed, contractors will be sodding and landscaping both locations into public green space, though Manitoba Hydro reserves the right to redevelop either or both sites in the future.
Both projects are expected to be complete this summer.
