Conservative Party candidate Raquel Dancho has been elected in Kildonan-St. Paul, unseating incumbent Liberal candidate MaryAnn Mihychuk.

“It feels amazing to be a woman at 29 and be elected, and such an honour,” Dancho said. “I am so grateful to my volunteers.”

Dancho, a 29-year-old policy analyst, has worked for cabinet ministers Cathy Cox and Rochelle Squires at the provincial level. She said she was inspired to put her name on the ballot by the women she has worked with in politics.

“I have to give a big shout-out to both of them,” she said.

On the campaign trail, Dancho committed to pushing for construction of the Chief Peguis extension from Main Street to CentrePort and remedial work on the North End Sewage Treatment Plant.

“Those are the local issues that I told voters I would champion, and now it’s my mandate to deliver on those things,” she said. “I want to get to work as soon as possible on those things.”

During her campaign, Dancho made a point of including as many young, first-time voters as possible.

“I hope to continue encouraging youth involvement going forward,” she said.

She also stressed the issue of affordability was still a top priority for her.

“We need to ensure that we hold the government accountable,” Dancho said. “We need to make life more affordable for people.”
