The Transcona Council for Seniors meal program before COVID-19 was a great opportunity for seniors to get a delicious and nutritious meal along with having a chance to socialize with other seniors.
As social distancing protocols and public gathering limits began to be put in place by the province in March, the Council for Seniors had to adjust to the new normal so that they could safely deliver this program during a pandemic.
Colleen Tackaberry, Transcona Seniors Resource Finder and a Director on the board of Transcona Council for Seniors explained how they adapted to this new normal. “We began to deliver meals to seniors who needed it, and we had a new service which we never had before which was volunteers going out and grocery shopping for people who needed the extra assistance.”
Like any program, it takes a team effort to be effective fully and this is where Colleen connected with the Transcona Retired Citizens Centre for its assistance in reaching out to their membership.
Yvonne Boisclair, president of the centre, has been making calls ,along with many others at TRCC, checking in on one another during the pandemic.
“We made a donation to the meal program from the Centre to the Council for Seniors this year to help out.”
The Council for Seniors’ meal program has been able to move to a takeout pick-up service on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 p.m. at 209 Yale Ave. W. and Thursdays from 11:30 am at 500 Widlake St. Orders can be made via telephone by calling 204-222-5947 or by emailing tcs@mymts.net
Folks are encouraged to place their orders on Fridays for the Monday program and on Mondays for the Wednesday/Thursday program.
The Transcona Council for Seniors is now preparing for the second wave of COVID-19, and in doing so, it will be reaching out to seniors to complete a short survey to see how they can improve their programming. This survey will help Colleen and her team address any gaps there may have been in their initial response to COVID-19.
