Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler announced on Sept. 15 that the province is ready to move forward in building a new bridge over the Red River Floodway on Highway 59.
“This bridge behind us has served Manitobans well,” Schuler said. “It is a very heavily trafficked bridge, particularly summer weekends with traffic going to cottage country. But it is also important for economic reasons.”
In May 2019, the province began consultations on a replacement for the bridge, which was built in 1964.
According to Schuler, a northbound and southbound bridge will be built to floodway standards. As a result, the new span will be 1.5 meters higher than the current bridge. Schuler added that the government hopes construction will be completed by 2023, and that traffic can continue to move along Highway 59 during construction.
“This is a project Manitobans have been calling for,” Schuler said, before reminding motorists to “be mindful of the men and women who work on these construction projects when driving through here.”
The project is expected to be sent to tender this month, with work beginning as early as this winter.
