The River East Transcona School Division has come up with a fitting way to celebrate the “drive” of the 1,000 members of its Class of 2021.

Between June 23 and 25, the division will hold a series of events to mark what has indeed been a unique school year.

The fun begins June 23 and it’s going to get loud, as everyone is encouraged to participate in Cheers for Grads at 6 p.m. sharp. Graduates are encouraged to come outside with their families and be ready for 6 p.m. so neighbours and passersby can honk horns to celebrate them. People are also encouraged to use the hashtag #CongratsRETSDgrads on social media as they share photos and videos.

Look for graduate signs in front yards to see if a graduate lives near you so you can plan ahead. There is also a poster in this edition of The Herald to place in your windows.

High schools will be hosting drive-thru ceremonies on June 24 and 25 said Karen Boyd, RETSD assistant superintendent of education programming.

Graduates and their families will arrive at their schools and proceed to pick up their diplomas in a socially distanced procession. There will be a photo opportunity and perhaps one last chance to walk the halls if restrictions allow.

With seven schools and a total of roughly 1,000 students, there was plenty of work to do, with the largest schools expecting 280 graduates.

Boyd credited teachers, already working hard during the pandemic, for their willingness to assume the responsibility.

“The schools and teachers, you can imagine, they’re exhausted from all the teaching but they have stepped up to be so creative to make sure the Grade 12s have a great sendoff,” Boyd said.

Graduation ceremonies will be held online, with families being sent a private link to their school’s ceremonies, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. on June 23.

They will feature comments from the principal, the valedictorian address, a virtual graduation procession and a montage of events from the school year.
