The Assiniboine Park Conservancy has revealed its plans for the next part of its redevelopment project: Canada’s Diversity Gardens.

Canada’s Diversity Gardens is described as an iconic horticultural attraction and is slated to be built in the southeast corner of Assiniboine Park.

According to a release it will be “designed as a celebration of our world’s cultural and bio-diversity.” According to reports, it will cost up to $70 million. If funding can be secured by then, construction is slated to begin in 2017.

“Canada’s Diversity Gardens will be one of the most stunning attractions in Canada,” said Margaret Redmond, Assiniboine Park Conservancy president and CEO, in a statement.

“Indoors and outdoors, it will represent a fresh take on the blending of culture, diversity, plant collections, horticultural displays and community gathering space all in one location. It will be a meaningful centre of activity for the entire community.”

There will be four cornerstone attractions to the gardens – The Leaf, Indigenous Peoples’ Garden, Cultural Mosaic Gardens and The Grove. Each is described an exploration of the human connection with plants and nature.

Canada’s Diversity Gardens will also have a classroom component whereby schools can participate in nation-leading environmental education programs year-round. The indoor classroom space, surrounding biomes, and outdoor gardens are also a backdrop for programs related to sustainability, global conservation issues.

“This is a very exciting new initiative for our city, our province and for Canada,” said Hartley Richardson, chair of Assiniboine Park Conservancy board of directors.
