Organizers of a pair of upcoming Glenlawn Collegiate reunions say they are still anxiously trying to make contact with alumni of the St. Vital high school.

Graduates of the collegiate from the classes of 1980 and 1990 are in the midst of planning their 30 and 20-year reunions.

The two groups have encountered drastically different levels of success in their efforts to contact former classmates using the Internet.

Karen Marchand, one of the organizers of the 1980 reunion, said that her group has not had much success in locating more than 230 classmates online and have actually had more success using more traditional means such as the phone book.

“We tried online but did not get very far. We’ve honestly done better with phone calls,” she said.

“We have found our classmates, but it has been mostly through word of mouth versus technology.”

The Facebook group for 1980 hasn’t had much success, with only a handful of former classmates having signed up.

However, Marla Paul-Merasty of the 1990 reunion organizing committee said that her group has enjoyed all kinds of success online, despite just starting out in attempting to connect with former classmates.

“We’ve been talking to people through Facebook and we are doing pretty well,” she said.

Paul-Merasty said a decision was made to keep the 1990 event low-key. The 1990 class is considering holding a dinner get-together on June 19.

“We’re in the midst of collecting names and numbers and as the date gets closer we’ll be re-contacting them,” she said.

A meet-and-greet bingo bowl for the 1980 class will be held May 21 at the Dakota Bowling Lanes. It will be followed on May 22 by an upscale reunion dance at the Glenlawn Community Club, located 27 Overton St. beginning at 8 p.m.
