St. Vital byelection race heating up

Another contender has announced he’ll seek to replace St. Vital councillor Gord Steeves in a yet-to-be-called civic byelection.

Carl Osato — a general manager for Cineplex Entertainment and owner of Osato Property Management — says his campaign will focus on safety, health and community.

“For safety, I want to increase the support for the Winnipeg Police Service in their endeavours to make our city a safer place. I want to promote health by looking to continue to increase the city’s active transportation network,” Osato said in a statement.

“I would love to see more neighbourhood events and open houses within St. Vital to continue to grow a sense of community and engagement in city politics.”

This is not the first time Osato has run for office. In 2006, he ran for council in Old Kildonan, where he grew up.

He says now he’ll take a shot in St. Vital, where he’s lived for many years.

Osato joins three other candidates: New Democrat Brian Mayes, Progressive Conservative Greg Nordman and independent Mike Ducharme.

Steeves resigned last month in order to run for the Progressive Conservatives in the Seine River riding in the Oct. 4 provincial election.

Steeves will be facing off against NDP incumbent and provincial health minister Theresa Oswald.
