Iconic St. Boniface diner, the Red Top Drive Inn Restaurant, is about to become a reality TV star.

Red Top owner Peter Scouras recently received a call from Food Network Canada.

After a half an hour phone conversation it was decided that the diner would be featured on an upcoming episode of the network’s You Gotta Eat Here series.

Filming took place Nov. 10 and 11 at the landmark eatery.

“I think it went well. Two long days of filming, 30 hours of footage for a 10-minute segment. That’s two days of my life I won’t get back. I don’t want it to be a waste,” he said.

Red Top fit the mold for the show.

“I think they were looking for places with history and comfort food. We fit what they were looking for,” he said.

Scouras fed the hosts of the show the Red Top’s soon-to-be-famous fried chicken burger and the monster burger.

The Red Top Drive Inn has been located at 219 St. Mary’s Rd. since it opened in 1960.

Peter Scouras’ uncle, Gus, opened the restaurant with three partners.

Later his dad, John, bought into the business to make it a family-owned enterprise.

Peter Scouras took over the restaurant four years ago when his dad died.

The Red Top Drive Inn already has plenty of loyal customers, although Scouras likely won’t object if the program helps attract a few more.

“I’ve always been a busy restaurant,” he said.

The cast and crew of You Gotta Eat Here made another Winnipeg stop before leaving town.

The Red Top episode will also feature Canada’s first vegan burger cafe, Boon Burger, located on Sherbrook Avenue in West Broadway.

Employee Kathryn Kerr said she is excited Boon being featured on the show considering it’s not a conventional burger joint.

“I think it’s unique that they’re are filming here. We’re definitely an alternative to fast food.”
