Park improvements looking good

Royalwood residents can now enjoy new recreation options at Shorehill Drive Park.
The park is nestled next to the recent Royalwood Square condo development on Shorehill Drive. It offers a winding path, play equipment for children with benches, and an open green field with nearby picnic tables. One of the play structures features a stationary xylophone.
Dan Vandal, city councillor for St. Boniface ward, which includes Royalwood, walked through the park a few weeks ago to check out the development in person.
“It was great to see many families outside on a beautiful day,” Vandal says.
A community open house for the park took place in the spring of 2012. Discussions at that meeting and subsequent feedback from residents were incorporated into the site plan.
“Participation from residents has helped shape the park,” Vandal notes. “We knew from our community consultations that there was a need to provide recreation for young children and growing families, plus a green space.”
Vandal acknowledges that protecting natural habitat was also a priority.
“Royalwood is a unique neighbourhood, surrounded by wildlife, and it was very important not to lose that in creating the park.”
According to Vandal, the open and clear dialogue with constituents on the park’s development has been critical in meeting community expectations.
“I want to thank all the residents who took part in this process. We believe we’ve hit a good balance in responding to everyone’s needs.”
“The City of Winnipeg is investing more than $400,000 in Shorehill Drive Park, and I am confident it will be a great asset to the community for generations to come.”
An official opening for the park is planned for a Saturday afternoon in September. Vandal’s goal is to have as many Royalwood residents as possible take part. Until then, he invites residents to share their feedback with him.
“Before the park opens, we have an opportunity for citizens to provide their comments,” Vandal says. “I look forward to hearing from members of our community.”
