Rain can’t wash away Agape Villa’s end-of-season party

It takes more than a downpour to rain on the spirits of the residents at Agape Villa.

According to one event organizer, residents at the 55-plus apartment complex for seniors (395 Beaverhill Blvd.) had planned an outdoor barbecue, complete with a live band, dubbed Dog Days of Summer, for Sept. 14.

On the day, the hard work had paid off, everything was in place and the excitement was building for the start of the event — then the skies opened and the rain started to fall.

“The courtyard was brightly-decorated with fall-coloured tablecloths, the barbecue was in place and the residents were beginning to bring their chairs outside. Then down came the rain,” said resident Lynda Taylor.

“While some places may have cancelled the event, not the residents at Agape Villa. A few male residents appeared and within 10 minutes, everything, including the four-piece band Gold Spots, was set up in the indoor garage area. The doors at either end of the garage were opened to allow in lots of fresh air,” added Taylor, who is a member of the Agape Villa Residents’ Association.

Thanks to the quick-thinking efforts of those concerned, Taylor said 63 residents subsequently revelled in their reorganized party space and enjoyed “two hours of good entertainment, barbecued hot dogs and the garage floor provided an excellent dance floor.”

“Seniors do have a lot of fun and, while for most it was a new experience to have a garage party, everyone a great time. The garage party was quite a way to celebrate the end of the summer season. And sometimes, the unexpected turns out to be the best time of all,” she said.
