Police release final checkstop results

More than 4,000 vehicles stopped during month-long Festive Checkstop Program

Despite the recent cold snap, Winnipeg police were hot on the heels of thousands of motorists as they helped keep city roads safe during the holiday season.

The Winnipeg Police Service Central Traffic Unit has released the results from the fourth week of the annual Festive Checkstop Program, as well as the final aggregate total from last year’s program, which ran in partnership with Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries and operated from Dec. 2 through New Year’s Eve.

The fourth week program results were:
•  304 vehicles stopped.
•  27 Approved Screening Device (ASD) tests administered.   
•  Six 24-hour suspensions issued (ASD warns).
•  11 drive impaired/over/refusal charges.
•  18 traffic-related Provincial Offence Notices (PON) issued.

The final program results for 2013 were:
•  4,106 vehicles stopped.
•  246 Approved Screening Device (ASD) tests administered.   
•  43 24-hour suspensions issued (ASD warns).
•  55 drive impaired/over/refusal charges.
•  141 traffic-related Provincial Offence Notices (PON) issued.
•  Five other arrests.

The breakdown of the 55 impaired arrests:
•  240 mg% — highest blood alcohol concentration (BAC).
•  70 mg% — lowest BAC.
•  145 mg% — average BAC.
•  44 males.
•  11 females.
•  Oldest age — 66 years.
•  Youngest age —16 years.
•  Average age — 34 years.
