Hockey is in her blood

Jordy Wyant is 10 years old and she’s in Grade 4 at École R.H.G. Bonnycastle School. Her favourite class is gym and she does very well in school. Jordy is also a dynamic, smart and powerful defensive pillar for the South Winnipeg Kings hockey team.

Jordy’s been playing hockey for five years and is the only girl on the team. She wears number 10 and I asked why.

“Well, it’s my mom’s favourite number, and it’s my favourite number, and I’m turning 10,” she said.

Jordy is a big Winnipeg Jets fan and she has an autographed Bryan Little stick.

“He gave his stick away at the skills competition, and I have it at home!”

I asked Jordy if she could pick a defensive partner play with from the Jets who would it be.

“(Dustin) Byfuglien,” she said. “Because he is very good at defence.”

When I talked to Jordy, you could hear her passion for the game of hockey. I asked her what she liked most about it.

“The fun of it. When you get a chance to score and your teammates congratulate you, and when you shake hands and show good sportsmanship.”

Jordy’s family is quite active. Her parents, Janice and Graeme, and her younger brother, Riley, all enjoy sports. Actually, Jordy came to love hockey through watching her mom play.

“It was very fun to watch my mom play. I used to skate with her team.”

Janice beams when she speaks of her daughter.

“She amazes me. It’s a joy to watch her play with the boys. She gives her all, she is a big competitor.”

Jordy wanted to make sure I said hi to two of her friends, Annika and Bryanna.

She also had some advice for other youngsters who want to play hockey.

“It’s really fun to play because of your teammates. When you try to skate, it’s hard, but just try your best.”
