More than two decades after starting his culinary career, Luc Jean still has an appetite for success.
The St. Boniface resident is scheduled to present at the Winnipeg Renovation Show, which will be held at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg from Jan. 13 to 15.
Jean is the executive chef and partner at Mon Ami Louis on the Esplanade Riel pedestrian bridge, and also runs the catering at Winnipeg’s New Millennium Centre. He is also working on a cooking show for CBC/Radio-Canada that will start in the spring.
Jean said he will aim to make his presentation at the upcoming renovation show interesting and informative.
“The home renovation show is fun,” he said.
“I will be talking about knife sharpening and care for one demonstration, and the other will be on filleting and cooking salmon. I wanted to something interesting. People always ask me to come and sharpen their knives, so I thought I should do some demos.”
The 38-year-old said it’s important to try and create a visible presence in the restaurant business, and noted the show is a perfect opportunity to introduce individuals who may be unaware of Mon Ami Louis to the restaurant.
“When working in restaurants, we always try to get out into the public eye and get exposure, as it’s a very competitive industry. I hope to do some great demos and garner some interest towards the restaurant and what we do,” Jean said.
Mon Ami Louis, which is owned by WOW! Hospitality Concepts, opened its doors in July 2015 and is the latest tenant of the unique space on the landmark bridge that was previously occupied by Salisbury House and Chez Sophie sur le pont. Though currently closed for the winter, diners will once again be able to enjoy Jean’s creations when the weather warms up.
Describing his menu as upscale comfort food, rather than fine dining, Jean said the restaurant draws inspiration from everywhere French is spoken, whether it be France, Morocco, Louisiana or Quebec. The menu includes mouthwatering entrees such a poulet a l’orange, duck pot pie, bison meatballs, roasted Norwegian salmon, Moroccan lamb stew, and butternut squash and spinach cannelloni au gratin.
“The restaurant has been quite busy since opening,” Jean said.
“We’ve had great support from the community.”
The show will feature a mix of the industry’s top talent, including some of Winnipeg’s top designers and renovation experts, as well as celebrity guests, including HGTV’s Mia Parres and Rob Evans from The Expandables.
The Winnipeg Renovation Show will run from Jan. 13 between noon and 9 p.m., Jan. 14 from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Jan. 15 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
