Windsor Park resident Buffy Handel has been has been named the 2017 YMCA-YWCA Women of Distinction Award winner in the arts, culture and heritage category, sponsored by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries. Nominated by Brenda Parsons, Handel is recognized as a champion role model for Indigenous youth. In 2008, Handel founded the Aboriginal School of Dance, the first professional Aboriginal dance studio in Manitoba, organizers say. The studio helps mentor struggling youth to learn how to support themselves, while encouraging youth to take on increasing roles of responsibility, teaching them independence and confidence, while preserving their own distinct cultural identity through music and dance. In 2012 and 2013, Handel also initiated Folklorama’s Indigenous Mardi Gras pavilion
