Redd Line Jewellery a bit of a hidden gem

When it comes to his creative talents, the sky’s the limit for Christopher Redd.

Along with his wife, Lori, Redd is the owner of Redd Line Jewellery, which is located at 725 St. Mary’s Rd.

For more than 20 years, Redd has been dedicated to designing and making fine artisan gold and silver jewelry items for his clients, and he is also a lapidary artist, stonecutter sculptor and gem maker who works with Canadian diamonds and precious gems. Redd said the business offers custom designs, redesigns of previously-worn precious metals, and repair work.

Redd’s horizons have also expanded to computer-aided design, and his workspace is certainly eye candy for anyone with an interest in the art and design of making jewelry. As well, he recently purchased a 3D printer for creating designs, and has also upgraded his repair machines to include “a fascinating pulse arc welder for welding any kind of gold, silver or precious metals.”   

“The 3-D printer is kind of like a growing machine and it actually kind of grows models for making into gold rings,” Redd said. “Using a liquid resin, the machine will draw and build a castable model of a ring if, for example, the client wants to remake a ring for his wife or partner. This takes the process to a whole new level of experience and interaction, and I can also guide client participation if they want to help design the ring themselves.”

Redd said his passion for creating jewelry is matched by his passion for helping people, and if someone makes it as far as his business premises, then he knows they are serious about utilizing his services.

“First of all, I give people a lot of credit if they find my shop. If you’re here, then hopefully you’ve seen examples of my quality work. I’m not interested in making a fortune off you,” he said, adding he has also sold items at various other locations through the years such as St. Norbert Farmers’ Market and FortWhyte Alive.

“For men, it’s important to empower them to help strengthen their relationships. I’m a Christian guy, and it’s very important to foster the sanctity and sacredness of relationships. A lot of guys become overpowered by this, so by creating something for their partner gives them the chance to be involved in the process of creating something meaningful from their heart. This helps me facilitate their creativity, and also helps me build a rapport with my clients.”

In terms of his current location, which the business has occupied since 2010, Redd said he wanted a different ambience to being located in a strip mall.

“I wanted to locate in the community, and be a valued asset in the community. It’s such an honour to be able to step into people’s lives, and to work on things like wedding rings for people’s kids after doing their wedding rings a generation earlier,” Redd said.

Earlier this year, Redd and Lori also proudly received the Glass Banjo Award from the board of the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the event.
