Feb. 5 Riel community committee meeting highlights
• The Riel community committee approved a per capita grant of $400 from the St. Vital ward allocation to Share the Magic Book Program to help with the cost of a book pallet for the Morrow Avenue Child Care. According to City of Winnipeg documents, the First Book Canada pallet of books will be distributed to 10 Morrow Avenue Child Care centres throughout St. Vital. The goal of the program is to provide quality reading material to low-income Manitobans of all ages, officials say.
• The committee approved a community incentive grant for $12,000 from the St. Vital ward allocation to the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Emile to help with the cost of its kitchen renovation project. The grant must not exceed a maximum of 50 per cent of the total project cost and is subject to a number of conditions.
• The committee approved an application for land dedication reserve funding for $200,000 from the Riel land dedication reserve (St. Vital allocation) to the Louis Riel School Division to help with the cost of the Victor Mager Running Track project. The funding is subject to the following condition: that project plans and specifications must be approved by the appropriate City of Winnipeg staff.
• The committee approved a per capita grant for $400 — $200 from the St. Boniface ward allocation and $200 from the St. Vital ward allocation — to Royalwood resident Dee Dee Budgell to help with the cost of the Ride of Hope, which is scheduled for June 3. The goal is that riders will leave from the personal care home at Riverview Health Centre and ride to St. Adolphe and back.
• The committee recommended to the standing policy committee on infrastructure renewal and public works that undertake a review on the requirements for reopening the Speers Road right of way, between Winakwa Road and Jogues Road in Windsor Park, for use only by pedestrians and cyclists.
• The committee approved a per capita grant for $250 from the St. Boniface ward allocation to Chevaliers de Colomb de Conseil to help with the cost of Le Relais des Pionniers. The group runs a French trading post that is manned by volunteers during Festival du Voyageur.
• The committee approved a per capita grant for $150 from the South Winnipeg-St. Norbert ward to the Indian Student Association at the University of Manitoba to help with the cost of student support services.
