Family fun at Highbury School to mark 25 years

There will be lots to celebrate at Highbury School on June 7.

That’s the date of the River Park South-based school’s Family Fun Night, which will also serve to mark the school’s 25th anniversary.

Stacey Milne-Ciecko, president of the Highbury Parents Association, said the celebratory event will include several speakers — including a staff member, a parent, and a student — who will talk about what the school means to them.

As well, a time capsule dating back to the school’s early days will be opened, and new items will be placed in it. There will also be a slideshow depicting the school through the years. As well, the family event will feature a barbecue with a hotdog, chips and drink for $4, a silent auction, a photo booth, and games including hamster balls and laser tag for which a wristband will be available to purchase for $6.

“Our principal, Reno Gerl, is also in a band, so he’ll be performing at the event, too,” said Milne-Ciecko, whose children Liam (Grade 6), Colin (Grade 3), and Breyen (Grade 2) attend the school.  

“We have a really great community here at Highbury, and a fantastic group of teachers and students, and this is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate all their amazing work. We have a very strong musical program, an Orff Club that has attended national events, and a practical arts program that welcomes students from across the school division,” she added.

In 2014, Milne-Ciecko’s family was among those affected when Louis Riel School Division implemented a number of school reconfigurations to accommodate the increased demand for French immersion programming in southeast Winnipeg. At the time, her oldest son attended George McDowell School, which is now École George-McDowell, and Highbury was one of the neighbouring schools that accepted the original George McDowell students.

“Lots of these students from George McDowell came to Highbury, and we were welcomed with open arms. This is a great opportunity to celebrate how welcoming Highbury has been. When these changes saw the student population increase, it changed the whole community here for the better, and we feel lucky to be here,” Milne-Ciecko said.

She said members of the school’s community and anyone involved with the school in some way through the years is welcome to attend the event.

The June 7 event will start at 4:30 p.m. The school is located at 99 Highbury Rd.
