École Sage Creek School’s parent council will be hosting its inaugural community run on Sun., Oct. 7.
Run Sage Creek is a walk/run in the Sage Creek Community with the goal of encouraging and inspiring everyone to get outside and be active. All funds raised will go to the Parent Advisory Council of École Sage Creek School. The first annual Run Sage Creek offers a variety of options to accommodate all activity levels including run/walk lengths of one, three, five, or 10 kilometres.
“This has been an incredible amount of work for our parent council volunteers but the support from local businesses, families and the amazing running community has been inspiring,” Sandra-Dee Beer, chair of the parent advisory council said.
“We’re looking forward to an incredible community event on October 7th that will showcase our beautiful community, encourage a physically active and healthy lifestyle, and raise money for reading books that are needed within our school. It’s a win-win-win,” she added.
Although the committee recognized that the event falls on Thanksgiving weekend, Oct. 7 was selected since it aligns closely with Terry Fox week at École Sage Creek School without competing with other events in and around Winnipeg.
The Run Sage Creek Committee hopes that families will make this first annual event part of their Thanksgiving celebrations.
The one-kilometre fun run was designed with children in mind, including the smallest runners. There is no age minimum or maximum. All registered 1km race participants will receive a reusable swag bag, T-shirt, and finisher medal. One parent or guardian aged 12 or older may run with younger children without being registered for the 1km Fun Run, but they will not receive the bag, t-shirt, or finisher medal. All unregistered parents and guardians who accompany children on the course will be required to sign a course waiver at race kit pickup. The three, five, and 10 kilometre races will have chip timing.
The route involves a combination of roadways and limestone trails that wind their way through Sage Creek.
Everyone in the family is encouraged to participate, even if that means they’re cheering on mom or dad from their stroller. Out of consideration for other participants, runners and walkers with a stroller are asked to start near the back of the start line to reduce traffic jams. Dogs are not permitted on the course as it may be fairly narrow in some places and the risk of leashes becoming tangled in runners’ feet and stroller wheels is a concern.
Run Sage Creek is still looking for volunteers to help support runners/walkers on race day. Visit www.runsagecreek.com to register, to run or to volunteer.
