Moyes’ kids inspired him to run in election

Mike Moyes knows a thing or two about the educational needs of a diverse population.  

The married father of two — who teaches English, history, geography and global issues at Glenlawn Collegiate — has been a teacher for 16 years, most of which have been spent working with students with diverse needs in Louis Riel School Division.

“I was inspired to run by my kids, Landon and Nyah, and I want to help make Manitoba a better place,” said Moyes, 38, the provincial New Democratic party candidate running in the Riel constituency.

During his door-to-door campaign, Moyes said he has heard concerns by area residents about the health care and education systems.

“Lots of people are concerned about health care cuts, such as the emergency room closures and the closures of the five QuickCare clinics, and I’ve heard quite a bit about education, such as concerns over class sizes,” he said.

“I’ve also been hearing from some young families about how difficult it is to get a daycare spot.”

If elected on Sept. 10, Moyes said he would relish the opportunity to represent the diverse population that makes up the southeast Winnipeg riding.

“The population is very diverse, and it ranges from people who have grown up in St. Vital or owned a home there for a number of years to young families that have just moved into the area, and also new Canadians that are making Manitoba their home,” Moyes said.

“I’m learning a lot from people talking to them on their doorsteps, which is further inspiring me to help make a difference in the community.”

“And if I’m elected and I’m able to help people by being part of improving the health care system or education system, or helping them secure an affordable daycare spot, then I’d know I had played my part and done my job properly,” he added.

Also running in Riel are Green candidate Roger Schellenberg, Liberal candidate Neil Johnston, and incumbent MLA for Riel and PC candidate Rochelle Squires.
