A group of students from the University of Manitoba are busy fundraising for Cystic Fibrosis Canada.

The students from the Asper School of Business are taking part in Shinerama, which is holding an External Shine Day on Sept. 20 throughout the day.

As part of that day, the students will be sending volunteers to 10 Shine Sites around the city, where students in easily visible orange T-shirts will be collecting donations for the cause.

Michela Troia, director of public relations for the U of M’s Shinerama event, said the group “all feels very passionate” about support research into cystic fibrosis, and she noted that individuals can continue to donate to the cause after Sept. 20.

“We’re trying to raise $20,000, and we’ve raised over $10,000 so far, so we’re getting there,” said Troia, who lives in Linden Woods, noting have also donated proceeds from a textbook sale at the university.

Another key organizer, River Park South resident Trent Favoni-Grossart, said there will also be a themed trivia night on Oct. 3, as well as a social at Upstairs in the Village on Oct. 18. Favoni-Grossart is vice-president of social for the Commerce Students’ Association.

According to a statement, Shinerama is billed as Canada’s largest post-secondary fundraiser for Cystic Fibrosis Canada. It states cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease in Canada, claiming the lives of many children and adolescents every year. In 1960, a child diagnosed with cystic fibrosis was not expected to reach the age of five, but now the average life expectancy is now more than 50. However, there is still no cure.
