Réjeanne Caron has known for some time that she’s wanted to be the MP for Saint Boniface–Saint Vital.
The Conservative Party of Canada candidate in the federal riding announced her candidacy early last year.
And now, the longtime police officer is looking forward to serving the community in a different way if she’s elected in the upcoming federal election. As a 25-year Winnipeg Police Service veteran, Caron said she’s seen first-hand the impact that crime and drugs have had in the community.
“As a mother and a policewoman, I’ve seen crime increase, and there’s often no voice for the victims,” Caron, 46, said, noting the ongoing meth crisis is a major concern, and that many residents in the riding are upset about this.
“I’m concerned about the communities in the riding, and I definitely feel there needs to be more done with regards to public safety, and I’d like to be a voice for my riding. People are telling me they’re concerned about their kids going outside and walking to 7-Eleven after dark. I’ve been in the area since I was six years old, and I’ve definitely seen some changes.”
In terms of the economy, the Bear Clan board member said she’s concerned for the next generation when it comes to affordability.
“I want the next generation to be able to afford a house and have the same opportunities I’ve had. It’s now hard for Canadians to get ahead, and we need to help create a future for our children. I’m hearing from many people that they’re finding it hard to get by, and that their dollars don’t stretch as far when they go the grocery store. The Conservatives want to put more dollars in people’s pockets,” she said.
Caron said she’s a proud of francophone and Métis roots, which she says is significant in the riding’s heritage and culture.
“I’m a francophone Métis woman, and it’s important to me to support the French language, which has deep cultural roots in the riding,” she said.
“I grew up in the heart of St. Boniface, and my father’s small business still serves St. Boniface. The cultural background and history of the area is something I take very seriously.”
Caron said her party also takes the environmental issues “very seriously” and believes in green innovation.
Caron is married and has a daughter.
On Sept. 21, Caron commented on and retweeted a tweet from a Twitter user who self-describes as a white nationalist. When asked by The Lance about the tweet, Caron said she “did not realize the leanings of the account,” and added she has since deleted the tweet and unfollowed the account.
