Roger Schellenberg believes it’s time for a change — so he’s stepped up to try and provide it.
Schellenberg is the Green Party of Manitoba candidate for Riel.
"I’ve not been happy with provincial governments in the past, and I feel well-qualified to contribute to working for the future of Manitobans," Schellenberg said.
Schellenberg, a retired federal government employee of 32 years, said health care has been a big issue with area residents he’s talked to in the run-up to the election, including emergency room closures, and staffing levels at health care facilities in the province.
The 64-year-old — a married father of five and grandfather of six — said he is pleased and proud to be living in a riding that has such a diverse population.
"It’s a very rich ward in terms of diversity, and it includes people of different ages, cultures, and socio-economic status. I’m proud to be part of it, and I’d be honoured to represent the as an elected official."
As reflected in the party he has chosen to represent, Schellenberg said the state of the environment is a huge cause for concern to him.
"We’re at crisis point. We need to reduce greenhouse gases, transition away from fossil fuels, and protect our ecosystems,"
Schellenberg said, adding that concerns about Lake Winnipeg are one local example of an environmental issue that needs serious attention.
"I believe we also need to promote the use of electric vehicles and buses, have more urban greenspace and urban forest, and pay more attention to plastic waste, and building codes. It’s time to be bold, it’s time to listen to the people of the province, and it’s time to make things happen. The Green Party of Manitoba is the party to do that."
Also running in Riel are Liberal candidate Neil Johnston, NDP candidate Mike Moyes, and incumbent MLA for Riel and PC candidate Rochelle Squires.
