The site of a former school in south St. Vital will now provide recreational space to community members living in the area.
Mountbatten Park, located at 3191 St. Mary’s Rd. at Forbes Road in the St. Germain area, was officially opened recently. The park is located on the former grounds of Mountbatten School, which is south of the Perimeter, but inside city limits.
Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said the park includes new benches, swings, a gravel walking path and a field for playing sports, which could soon become a temporary venue for Bonivital Soccer Club, as the team’s St. Vital Memorial Park base is currently undergoing an overhaul.
“It’s a soccer field that can be used for playing field sports,” Mayes said, noting he has been given the green light to install goalposts. “Hopefully, Bonivital will be able to use in it September.”
On a larger scale, Mayes said the park will benefit residents south of the Perimeter, as well as the rest of the city.
“It will certainly benefit area residents, as there is no community centre or park in the immediate area, and it is important for local people to have somewhere to meet. Mountbatten Park can become a hub, where people can take their kids and enjoy the outdoor recreational space,” he said.
The two-storey, four-classroom Mountbatten School was in use between 1948 and 2004, when it was closed due to declining enrolment. The building stood derelict before it was eventually torn down and the land was purchased from Louis Riel School Division by the city in 2012, Mayes said.
