A growing recreation hub in St. Vital is serving up another opportunity for community members.
Two new tennis/pickleball courts at Dakota Collegiate were officially opened recently, marking the continued development of leisure facilities for the school and the wider community at the Dakota Street-based collegiate.
According to a news release, the courts are the fourth new recreation facility to open at DCI since 2016. In what represents another partnership between the City of Winnipeg and Louis Riel School Division, the courts complement the previous installation of a 400-metre, four-lane, rubberized outdoor running track across the street at Victor Mager School last year, officials say.

As a graduate of Dakota, Coun. Brian Mayes (St. Vital) said it’s been one the highlights of his political career to play a part in the building of these facilities.
“I’ve seen all of the facilities in use at the same time, and it’s a powerful reminder of what a school can mean for its community. Go Lancers,” Mayes said in the release.
As well as the new courts, the school facilities also include a new basketball court, a cricket/softball batting cage, and a turf sports field.
Mayes contributed $185,000 and Coun. Markus Chambers (St. Norbert- Seine River) contributed $75,000 towards the project. The funds came from their respective ward allowances.
“By building these spaces, we are helping members of our community achieve their full potential, as learning and personal growth happens in and outside of the school walls,” LRSD’s board chair Louise Johnston said in the release.
Jill Mathez, Dakota’s principal, added in the release that the recreation hub is the result of lots of hard work and support from individual community members and corporate sponsors, as well as Mayes and Chambers, which started seven years ago “when we embarked on making the dream of having a state-of-the-art athletic field at Dakota a reality,” she said.
