Aside from the St. Vital race, and a new face in Southdale, voters in other parts of southeast Winnipeg chose to stick with their incumbent MLAs in the Sept. 10 provincial election, including one that ran in a new constituency.

Andrew Smith, who had been the Progressive Conservative MLA in Southdale since 2016, won the race for the new constituency of Lagimodière with 5,182 votes, beating NDP candidate and nearest rival Billie Cross, who received 2,789 votes.

The new constituency was created, in part, to accommodate significant growth and projected growth in the Sage Creek area of southeast Winnipeg.

“It is a tremendous honour to be the first MLA for Lagimodière,” Smith said. “I thank the people of this new constituency for entrusting me to represent them in the Legislature for a second term. To the good people of Southdale, it has been a privilege to represent you over the last three years.”

In Riel, incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA Rochelle Squires was re-elected with 4,472 votes, beating NDP candidate and closest rival Mike Moyes, who garnered 3,554 votes.
Squires said she’s honoured to be re-elected in Riel.

“I am so honoured to be re-elected for a second term as the MLA for Riel. I feel elated, extremely grateful and overwhelmingly excited to get back to work serving the constituents. It’s an honour of a lifetime,” she said.

Incumbent Progressive Conservative MLA Janice Morley-Lecomte was re-elected in the newly aligned constituency of Seine River, which includes the St. Norbert neighbourhood. Morley-Lecomte won with 4,363 votes, beating NDP candidate and nearest rival Durdana Islam, who registered 2,513 votes.

Morley-Lecomte said she is thankful for the support of the residents of Seine River.
“It is my honour to represent the constituency of Seine River,” she said.

“Seine River truly represents Manitoba, as it has rural, urban and diverse cultures all represented within its defined electoral boundaries.”

“Campaigning in the community and meeting everyone allowed me to truly appreciate the uniqueness and multicultural aspects which Seine River represents,” Morley-Lecomte added, noting the addition of St. Norbert has “brought a strong francophone presence to Seine River.”

In the Southdale constituency vacated by Smith there was an exciting see-saw battle between Progressive Conservative candidate Audrey Gordon and NDP candidate Karen Myshkowsky. Gordon won the race with a plurality of 531, receiving 4,486 votes, while Myshkowsky collected 3,955 votes.

“Winning the riding is so very rewarding after months of so much hard work,” Gordon said. “It’s no secret I’ve wanted to be an MLA for many years, and I’m excited to be a strong voice.

“Winning is always a great experience, and during the campaign I very much enjoyed strengthening my connections to seniors’ groups, faith groups and local businesses, as well as connecting with teachers and health care professionals. I speak their language, and I understand the issues they are faced with. I’m pleased the people of Southdale placed their confidence in me.”
