The St. James Assiniboia Centennial Pool is expected to reopen sometime in mid-September following a $1.8-million upgrade to the pool and grounds.

The pool, which closed June 19 for upgrades to the its boiler system, is expected to reopen by Sept. 15, said Paul Huntington, the city’s aquatics and active living co-ordinator.

“That’s the big reason the actual pool has to close. As you can imagine it’s massive work to do that,” Huntington said, noting the project’s $1-million price tag.

“That’s a major, major upgrade.”

Along with the boilers, the city will be spending $70,000 to install a UV filtration system for the pool. The system will enhance the quality of water in the pool, Huntington said.

The city will also spend $250,000 upgrading the fence around the parking lot and increasing the amount of parking.

There will also be upgrades to the pool’s fitness area flooring, and some lockers and sinks will be replaced.

Larger city pools are shut down every two years for maintenance and upgrades, while smaller pools are closed every third year, Huntington said.

“Timing is always important for us,” Huntington said, noting it will take 14 weeks to replace the boilers.

“In the summer, because there are more pools open, it’s the most preferable time for major work.”

Meanwhile, work will begin later this summer on a $500,000 splash pad project.

The spray pad might be tested this summer, but it won’t officially open until 2013, Huntington said.
