Equipping your young child with a new, back-to-school tablet for access to games, educational software, and learning tools, doesn’t have to break the bank, say industry experts.
Dr. Helen Boehm is an educational psychologist and the author of The Official Guide to the Right Toys and Fearless Parenting for the New Millennium.
She says, “There are several low-cost, highly effective, touch screen tablets on the market that offer children access to educational apps and games — but without the hefty price tag of adult tablets.”
Look for devices designed specifically for kids that entertain while teaching. Parents will also want to find certain standard features such as touch screen technology, secure Wi-Fi connectivity, easy access to app environments, a camera, and the ability to play videos and MP3s.
“The tablets developed to enhance children’s skills also have the basic functions every child wants,” the psychologist explains. “Additional features may raise the price significantly, but do not necessarily benefit elementary school-aged youngsters.”
Two good options Boehm recommends are the new VTech InnoTab 3 and 3S learning app tablets. Each combines age-appropriate educational games, apps, and activities designed to promote creativity and enhance reading skills, all in a child- friendly, multi-function, touch screen tablet to make learning fun.
The InnoTab 3S comes with added secure Wi-Fi technology allowing children to safely browse only pre-selected and parent-approved websites. While designed specifically for kids, each also functions the same as a standard ‘adult’ tablet with a touch screen and cameras, but with a tough, durable case to protect it from drops and spills.
