More than 30 members of the Winnipeg Etsy Street Team (WEST) are moving their online stores out to the Wolseley area for a few hours.

On Oct. 12, WEST Handmade and Vintage Sale IV will be taking place at the Robert A. Steen Community Centre (980 Palmerston Ave.) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WEST is comprised of 130 crafters, jewelry makers, and artists in Manitoba. Etsy is an online marketplace where people can sign up and sell their handmade and vintage products.

“The WEST is a team of Etsy sellers that are located in Manitoba. We’re not hired by Etsy,” WEST captain Ruth Smith said. “We group together to promote our Etsy shops and also organize local events for our handmade, vintage, and supply sellers.”

Like the original Etsy website, there will be three types of items for sale at the event — handmade, vintage, and craft supplies. Smith said WEST follows similar guidelines as Etsy. For example, in order to be considered vintage, an item must be no less than 20 years old.

Smith, a St. James resident, runs an Etsy shop called PeriwinkleDzyns.

“I sell jewelry made from upcycled computer parts, and buttons from old maps and dictionaries,” Smith said. “I also have other product lines that I sell at craft sales and conventions.”

Smith has been making crafts for a long time, and when she discovered Etsy in 2008, she knew she had to join and sell her products to a wider audience.

“I found it a great venue to showcase my rather unusual items,” Smith said.

WEST throws three annual sales: a spring sale, a fall sale, and a holiday sale.

The upcoming holiday sale is scheduled for Dec. 21 at Frame Arts Warehouse, in conjunction with the Maker’s Market.
