Zoo finds new director

The Assiniboine Park Zoo is welcoming a new zoo director with over 40 years of experience.
Dr. Brian Joseph comes to the zoo from the Living Coast Discovery Center in Chula Vista, Calif. where he was executive director.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to have someone with Brian’s level of knowledge and expertise coming on board here at the Assiniboine Park Zoo,” said Don Peterkin, chief operations officer for the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, in a release. “This is the most important time in our history as we near the opening of Journey to Churchill and Brian is the perfect person to lead us through this project and well into the future.”

Joseph’s experience complements the zoo’s direction. He’s previously worked on long-term strategic planning, exhibit/facility design and construction, interpretive programming, animal rehabilitation, animal husbandry management, field research, and veterinary medicine for non-domestic species, said the release.
“The plans for Assiniboine Park Zoo are extraordinary and I’m very happy to be joining such a great team of people here in Winnipeg,” said Joseph. “It’s such an incredibly exciting time for the zoo right now and I’m really looking forward to being a part of it.”
In addition, Joseph served on 17 accreditation teams, government affairs committees, and co-founded the Marine Mammal Taxon Advisory Group with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Joseph is also an Army Reserve veterinarian, having participated in humanitarian efforts around the world.
“Being able to attract someone of Brian’s calibre to this position says a lot about how far we’ve come as a leader in the zoo community, “said Peterkin. “His unique extensive background makes him a very sought-after individual, so this is a real coup for us.”
The zoo has been searching for a new director since Tim Sinclair-Smith decided to move his family back to Australia earlier this year.
