Provincial masters curling championships later this month

The sport of curling knows no age limits.

The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club (940 Vimy Rd.) is hosting the Provincial Masters Men’s and Women’s Curling Championship from Feb. 27 to Mar. 3.

AMCC manager Paul Batchelor, who is also the chairperson of the event committee, said men’s and women’s curling teams will return to the club to defend their championship title over the five days.

Batchelor said all of the participating teams will have a practice session on Feb. 26 followed by a banquet in the evening.

“The 27th will be curling all day, and then there’s opening ceremonies that night at around 6 p.m.,” Batchelor said. “And then they (continue curling) Saturday, Sunday, down to the finals on Monday.”

The tournament will be carried out in a round robin style, broken down into pools. At the end of the day, there will be a men’s provincial champion and a women’s provincial champion.

“The winners will go to Coaldale, Alta. for the 2014 Canadian Masters Curling Championships,” Batchelor said.

At the moment, only the men’s 16 curling teams are known, which include Ron Westcott and Ron McMorris from Fort Rouge, Kerry MacLennan from Charleswood, and Wayne Johnson from Assiniboia.

“The women’s deadline for entry isn’t until mid-February, so we don’t know how many women’s teams we’ll have,” Batchelor said. The AMCC website states the women’s teams will be finalized later on in the month.

In 2011, the AMCC actually hosted the Canadian Masters Curling Championships.

“We had about 24 teams here in 2011. Now we’re doing the provincial (championships), and the winners go to Alberta (for the Canadian championships),” Batchelor said.

The AMCC caters mostly to senior and masters curlers.

“A lot of these folks started curling as young folks,” Batchelor said.

Batchelor encourages people to come by the AMCC to watch the curling action. Admission is $20 for the entire event.
