A Crestview high school is celebrating its 50th birthday this spring.
John Taylor Collegiate (470 Hamilton Ave.) is marking the occasion by throwing its 50th anniversary reunion from May 16 to 18, inviting graduates from the past 50 years to register and attend three days of alumni-filled fun.
John Taylor principal Scott Lockhart said tickets are expected to be available for purchase by mid-February through the 50th anniversary website at jt50.ca
“On Friday night, we have a meet-and-greet at the school where our alumni can come back to the school and see a variety of different displays from each decade,” Lockhart said. “In that same evening, we will have a music celebration held at Canad Inns Polo Park.”
Four bands — each with John Taylor alumni members — are expected to perform on Friday evening. The bands are Everyone But Larry, Whole Lotta Angus, Matrix, and The Proud Sons.
On Saturday, there will be a pancake breakfast for alumni in the morning. The afternoon will consist of many sporting events, such as basketball, volleyball, hockey, and golf tournaments. The day will conclude with a dinner and dance at the RBC Convention Centre Winnipeg (375 York Ave.), with a performance by the Danny Kramer Event Band.
“Danny Kramer is a former grad as well,” Lockhart said.
The reunion will come to a nice, relaxing conclusion on Sunday.
“Depending on the weather, we’ll spend a nice, quiet afternoon outside,” Lockhart explained.
Although this event is mainly for former John Taylor students, current students attending the school are participating by volunteering their time in making it happen. Some students will act as tour guides for the meet-and-greet, some will cook the pancake breakfast, and some will organize the sporting events.
“Parents from the grad committee are also assisting with ticket sales,” Lockhart said. “It’s a big undertaking with lots of volunteers.”
Lockhart acknowledges that the reunion is a large-scale event, but organizers have received an overwhelming amount of participation and help.
“(Our volunteer co-ordinator) gets phone calls every week from people asking to help out,” Lockhart said. “We have sponsorships from former grads who are contributing to the event.”
Lockhart hopes that, in addition to throwing an event to remember for John Taylor alumni, current students will get a better sense of the kind of community they go to school in and recognize the many accomplishments of graduates before them.
“I hope they see that they’ve come from a good high school and will have good opportunities from the world,” Lockhart said.
