It’s (tabletop) game on at local hobby shop

A Crestview toy shop will be hosting festivities in honour of International Tabletop Day.

On April 5, tabletop gamers can visit Maxx Collectibles, located at 835 Cavalier Dr., from noon to 7 p.m. to take part in miniature painting seminars and watch tabletop strategy demonstrations for games such as Warhammer, Warmachine, and Infinity. Admission is free, and the event is open to all.

This is the second annual event celebrating International Tabletop Day, a creation of Geek & Sundry, an online community of self-proclaimed geeks who discuss games and comics.

“They have a show where they do board game demos,” said Garth Bowman, owner of Maxx Collectibles. “(International Tabletop Day) is their baby. They’re trying to get everybody to take part.”

The inaugural International Tabletop Day took place last year on March 30, 2013. According to the website (tabletopday.com), there were 3,123 gaming events in 64 countries worldwide.

This year, Geek & Sundry is expecting about 6,000 local meet-ups worldwide.

Maxx Collectibles is open from noon to 7 p.m. from Wednesday to Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The store is closed on Monday and Tuesday.
