Hair salon makes the cut

Hair today, but not gone tomorrow — a new hair salon in St. James is in it for the long haul.

Hair Pleaserz opened up at 2082 Ness Ave. on April 11. Co-owner Rayleen Becker said she and her silent business partner had been talking about owning their own business from November to December last year, but got the ball rolling earlier this January to February. Becker, 21, said it was quite easy to find the building they wanted, but everything afterwards was a challenge.

“We had to do a bunch of renovations,” Becker said. “We ordered our chairs from the states — that was hard, to get them over here. Working with the City was pretty hard because they have strict bylaws about permits. We got rejected a few times and had to keep trying until we finally got our occupancy permit.”

Becker said they started trying to get the permits for Hair Pleaserz in January, and they had only just received them on April 7.

“We wanted to be open for March 1, but we wanted to get everything installed (first),” Becker said.

Right now, the salon has four chairs, three sinks, two couches, and a TV on the wall.

“We have three tablets for clients, so while they’re waiting — we have hair apps on them — they can look up hairstyles,” Becker added. “If they have kids, they can play games. We have coffee too.”

Becker said this specific location was chosen because of its busy nature.

“There’s a Tim Hortons across the street — people always go to Tim Hortons,” Becker explained.

Hair Pleaserz is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. The salon is closed on Monday.

Becker said the salon needs only a few more touch-ups, such as a new coat of paint. Otherwise, the salon’s renovations are complete. She anticipates holding an official grand opening ceremony within the next couple of weeks when the weather warms up, so people can stop by and browse their products and learn about their services.

Becker is also one of the salon’s stylists, along with Jessica Gingras. Hair Pleaserz offers special discounts for military and emergency personnel — they get 15 per cent off services. Women’s haircuts start at $18 and men’s haircuts start at $15. Kids’ haircuts are $12 as long as they are under the age of 10.
