When you think of Bloody Mary, horror often comes to mind, but a local movie crew saw comedy instead.
Wolseley resident Ali Tataryn directed Bloody Mary, a five-minute comedy short starring Natalia Longley, Antosia Fiedur and Brock Couch. The movie premieres at the Gimli Film Festival on Fri., July 25. The film festival runs from July 23 to 27.
“I don’t want to give away the story, but Mary’s interested in a guy and she’s been stalking him for a while. Once they initially get to chat, she realizes she’s got her time of the month, and she has to figure how to deal with it.”
The surprise menstrual attack screams horror to Mary, played by Longley, but for the audience, it’s a comedy.
According to Tataryn, the plot was written by Longley and Fiedur.
“They approached me and asked me to direct. I jumped on board right away — it was too funny to say no,” Tataryn said. “It was an attempt to write a quirky comedy that every woman can relate to. It’s lighthearted with a little bit of shock factor.”
Tataryn said she and the movie crew shot the short over the span of two weekends.
“It’s really unique to be able to call your friends up and make a film. And that’s one of my favourite parts about a project like this — when your friends are all skilled actors, writers, producers, it makes it easy and fun,” Tataryn said. “You don’t have to worry so much about the equipment.”
Although Bloody Mary premieres at the Gimli Film Festival, it isn’t the very first premiere. The comedy had shown at CrankyFest, an “online film festival for short films about periods”, according to its website (crankyfest.com). Bloody Mary won an audience choice award as well as honorable mention for best film.
Tataryn said she and her team are still submitting Bloody Mary to film festivals, so she cannot post it online yet as it is against the rules. However, once the festival route is complete, Tataryn said she will have to check with Fiedur, who is also a producer for the movie, to find out when they can share it online.
