City councillor Scott Fielding (St. James-Brooklands-Weston) is running for MLA for Kirkfield Park in the next provincial election.
Fielding is not running in the civic election on Wed., Oct. 22.
Running as the Progressive Conservative Party of Manitoba’s candidate in the constituency, Fielding said his decision to run for the Kirkfield Park seat partly has to do with the fact that he grew up there.
“Kirkfield Park is the place where I was born and raised. I went to Athlone School, Bruce Middle School for junior high, and I went to Silver Heights Collegiate,” Fielding said. “It’s really a place that I’m no stranger to.”
Fielding also said the reason he’s running is because he believes “this government is on the wrong track.”
“I want to bring respect for taxpayers back, and to start listening to our citizens, which our government is not doing anymore. I think Manitobans want and deserve a government that’s willing to listen to them,” Fielding said.
The date of the next provincial election has not yet been set but is expected to take place in the fall of 2015.
Fielding has been a city councillor for eight years. He said he stuck to his commitment to run for two terms.
Since announcing his candidacy, Fielding said the reaction has been mostly positive.
“The hard work starts now. It’s a matter of putting a plan for the election and getting out there, talking to residents, citizens, and stakeholders,” Fielding said.
PC leader Brian Pallister is pleased to have Fielding run in the provincial election.
“He brings a lot of experience from his role as a public servant at the city council level, so he comes in with some very good connections in terms of his knowledge and networks around the city,” Pallister said. “I’m impressed with Scott in many ways. He brings the understanding of the needs of his constituents.”
