In a race with no incumbent, Marty Morantz, a relatively new face on Winnipeg’s political scene, was elected as councillor in the Charleswood-Tuxedo ward with 39.94 per cent of the vote.

The 52-year-old lawyer and property investment manager said he was cautiously optimistic he would take the seat as the poll results were reported.

“It’s a strange feeling to see the results come in when you’re part of the process,” he said. “It was nerve-racking.”

Morantz beat four others running in Charleswood-Tuxedo with 6,281 votes. Runner up Evan Duncan took in 5,812 votes (32.33 per cent) making for a close race in the ward.

“It was an exceptionally friendly and honourable campaign by all candidates,” Morantz said. “I have the highest regard for them all.”

Morantz’s campaign platform focused on improved street, park and community centre maintenance, the twinning of Wilkes Avenue, and the extension of the William R. Clement Parkway.

The abrupt end of William R. Clement Parkway at Grant Avenue and the redirection of traffic through Tuxedo and Charleswood is one of the biggest issues facing the ward, Morantz said.

He plans to address the extension of the parkway as one of his first priorities as a councillor.

Morantz also said he is excited to work with Brian Bowman and expects the new council to be collaborative and hard working.

“I’m looking forward to being sworn in on Nov. 4 and getting to know my colleagues,” he said.
Morantz thanked the voters and volunteers for their support and said he will do his best to advocate on their behalf.

Morantz takes over the ward from former councillor Paula Havixbeck.

The other candidates in the ward included Evan Duncan, with 5,812 votes (32.33 per cent), Luc Lewandoski who claimed 2,950 votes (16.41 per cent), Nadine Stiller who had 1,956 votes (10.88 per cent), and fourth runner up Kevin Nichols who pulled in just 978 votes (5.44 per cent). Overall 17,977 people voted representing 57.24 per cent of eligible voters.
