Charleswood has many great walking paths to enjoy with your family and/or your dogs.
One of my favourite and most convenient is the Thomas Chester pathway, which winds though Thomas Chester Park along the William Clement Parkway from Portage Avenue to Grant Avenue. It was named for Thomas Percy Chester, the former golf pro Charleswood Golf Club.
The walkway and park were once part of the golf course and one does not have to search too far into the trees to find a golf ball or two. Along the west side of the path, it is easy to spot wildlife including Canadian geese and deer lingering along the small, man-made lake.
I have even seen a fox in the early morning hours.
The path easily loops both the east and west sides by using the pedestrian Charleswood Bridge. It is paved and, for the most part, it is kept clear of snow in the winter as it links up to bus stops along the William Clement Parkway.
The summer months, naturally, see the most traffic on the pathway, with people out on their bikes or just going for a nice summer evening stroll. The made-made lake is enjoyable to watch from park benches and there are even a few who will have a picnic by the lake, which is not suitable for swimming or fishing. Signs remind dog owners to keep their pets on leashes at all times and to pick up after their dogs.
Now that spring has sprung, it is disappointing to see how much this bylaw is ignored.
If you like to have you dogs off leash, we still have the dog park just at the end of the walkway on Grant Avenue and this offers the safer alternative for all.
There are many wonderful walking paths in Charleswood, including the Harte Trail, Assiniboine Forest and the Assiniboine Park trails.
