Every year CancerCare Manitoba Foundation runs Challenge for Life — a one-day fundraising/awareness event. Participants commit to raising $500 for CancerCare Manitoba while taking an active role in maintaining their physical health and reducing their personal cancer risks.
The 2017 Challenge for Life will take place on Sat., June 10, when Challenge for Life 2.0 participants can “walk it” for 20 kilometres beginning and ending at Assiniboine Park, or they can “work it” by taking part in a 200-minute workout in the Park featuring aerobics to zumba and everything in between. (Bear in mind that it’s not 200 continuous minutes of exercise.
There will be breaks, snacks and a variety of exercises such as yoga, CrossFit and aerobics, to name a few.)
Deloitte Canada’s Winnipeg team numbers over 200-people and they’re always looking for ways to join forces with charities and not-for-profits to help raise money and bond together as co-workers.
Autumn Spulnick, an executive assistant at Deloitte in Winnipeg, spearheaded the idea to join the Challenge for Life this year.
“For me, I did the walk last year totally on my own and found it to be a really great experience,” she said.
“I found a lot of other corporations throughout Winnipeg were there as well and made mental note that I’d like to get a lot of my co-workers out next year and involved.”
Spulnick reached out to her colleagues this year and the response has been terrific.
“I told her that it sounds like a great idea,” said Dean Schinkel, managing partner at Deloitte in Winnipeg. “I think Autumn was a little unsure about how many people we’d get signed up but I told her not to worry and that we wouldn’t have a problem.”
Schinkel lost his father-in-law this past December to stomach cancer, and he knows the walk this year will be emotional but also a fun time to be together with so many people walking for the same cause.
“It’s really fresh and raw,” he said. “It’s going to be a long walk, that’s for sure. But it’s going to be a fun time with a lot of co-workers.
Deloitte has 14 people signed up and the response has been fantastic, Schinkel said.
“It’s nice to see our staff come together,” he said.
Deloitte has done the Canadian Cancer Society’s dragon boat races for a number of years and they’re confident that the Challenge for Life is an initiative they will continue to support.
